Garden 'chokes

 




I never saw artichokes growing
  in a garden, among city folk.
But I wondered who first tried
                                  to eat one,
  and who was the poor Artie
                              who choked.

Problems

I see that my gull friend has problems,
  has it ever happened to you?
You see something tasty, but find
                                         that a bite
  is more than a body can chew.

Heroes

So call us heels if you must (and we are),
   but we're heroes too, after all :
Think of walking, the posture, the"look"
                                         and the weight!
And we have to balance them all!

Crab's cry

They laid grandpa down in
                                the seaweed,
It was like he was made out of stone.
Please reach out your pincers
                                  and hold me, -
Dear grandpa, don't leave me alone!

Sibling rivalry

We're having a little contest,
my sisters, my brothers, and me:
Tell us, which of our leaves is the brightest?
Vote for me.
      vote for me,
           vote for me/me/me/me!  
                 

Quivering jelly

I'm only a poor, stranded jelly,
My father abandoned me.
Please father tide, before I'm all dried,
Take me back to my dear mother sea!

Ivy lesson

When ivy is stripped away from a wall,
you can still see its lifelong progression.
How nice for us all, if, when torn from
                                                  our wall,
we could leave such a lasting impression!

Country Club Duck

I flew in to check out  this fancy
                                  new pool, -
it's home to the country club crowd.
I know they're particular who they
                                            let in,
but it doesn't say ducks aren't allowed!

Arboreal ache

I never expected to grow like this, -
those arms, you'd think they
                                  would crack!
So now I'm the longest tree
                                  in the woods,
but oh,what it's done to my back!

Friends

"What do you want  from me,?" I said
   to answer his questioning air.
"Well what do you want from me",
                                   he replied.
"Oh, just to make friends" I said,
                                     so we were.
 

Snail's pace

I offered him roses for sniffing,
to enjoy on his upward climb.
"Don't you like to smell roses?",
                               I asked him.
"Not me, I haven't the time".

Lady-in-mourning

I used to invite all the world to come in, -
Come visit our welcoming shores!
Now what is it I'm supposed to do?
Put down my torch? Lock the door?

Dinner time

This one's a fat one, bigger than most,
I'm not sure I wrapped him just right.
Will he be tender or tougher, bitter or sweet?
I can't wait to try a bite!

Rueful romance

From the first, we were drawn to each other,
and our friendship developed fast.
We could be a wonderful couple.
what a pity we're made of brass!

grasshopper grazing

I don't want to seem egotistic,
but I care about how I am seen.
I like to choose my best background,
and of course I am proud to be green!

Dogged dog

I  know we're supposed to have
                                four legs,
but I'm doing fine with just three.
Just watch me run, I can beat
                                   any one,
you don't have to pity me!

Acknowlegement

I must say I wasn't attracted, -
 in the woods, where you caught my eye.
But I know that I have to acknowledge
You had more right to be there than I.

Getting a-head

What am I doing down here,
was it something I said?
I remember the party got rowdy,
I must have just lost my head!

Birch bud

Birch trees don't have many off-shoots,
so other buds don't take a chance.
But I hereby state my intention:
I'm going to make a new branch!

Seagull's struggle

When you're bothered by natural causes,
there's always one little hitch:
given the shape of our bodies,
it's hard when you've got an itch!

Dandy's dismay

You people rave about flowers, -
they're  "beautiful", "lovely"
                                  or "cute",
Well I'm a beautiful flower,
and  you pull me out by my root!

Dusk dance

When you're out on a quiet evening,
and the first gust of wind stirs the trees,
it's a joy to be there, with the freshening air,
as the grass starts to dance with the breeze.

Junior's musings

I'm a little green shoot that's wondering
 just what I will look like someday.
My ma and my pa are such big guys, -
will I  be as big as they?

Message?

I marvelled last evening
                         to witness
this mysterious message on high.
and wondered what mythical
                                creature
leaves fingerprints  up in the sky!

I know I may look ferocious,
but believe me,  it's only a plea.
Dear passer--by, take pity,
and put me back in the sea!

Nature's goals

Mother Nature in all her mysterious ways
gives us each different goals, I have found;
Us little green guys do our best to grow up,
while the big boys just like to hang down.

Who am I ?

I'm a lost little duck,  I"m lonely
                                    and scared,
and I can't find my family.
Don't know who I am or where or why.
Can someone identify me??

Duck daze

 

                                               They'll call me the mallard who made it,
                                                   (ducks were not welcome before).
                                               So I hope all the neighbors will see me.
                                                    just walking in the front door!

Bear Pause

I saw that bear in your treetop,
and I thought it looked just like me.
But a bear wouldn't wear all those dead vines,
and we never would swing in a tree!

Message?

I remember that look that you gave us,
on the boat, when you landed that day.
But you never answered my question:
what was it you wanted to say!

Transition

It's hard to come to the ending
when your blossoming days are gone;
but it's OK for me, now that I see
that the family tree goes on.
